White Night/Blues Blanc

Climbing down the Old Main at Midnight, homebound
Through the laughing clusters of young partygoers
My eyes caught by the grin of a horse-headed man
While my steps on the snow vanished behind me.

I had read all my lines in the softest warm voice
And received a few words of appreciation
Then spent four hours listening to strangers
Tasting their own sweet share of Timely Search

I had listened and felt and smiled and laughed and sighed
Clapped my hands gladly when they quit stumbling through
But I kept turning back, waiting for the shadow
Of a free-wheeling Vixen coming in and all true

When I left the reading before voices would dry
Stood in the underground, mute among the volumes
Aware I would never get to know the endline
Nor woo the young scholar hiding behind the screen

And now, climbing down Main, strolling between snowflakes
I hovered, full of words and sounds and memories
My heart nearly at peace, neither sad nor wary
Plotting a new fiction of endless love in time.

Blues Blanc

J'arpentais Saint-Laurent
A minuit, au retour
Parmi les grappes riantes
Des jeunes gens en sortie
Quand mes yeux ont croisé
Un homme à tête de cheval
Et mes pas sur la neige
S'effaçaient derrière moi.

J'avais lu ma partie
De ma voix la plus douce
Et reçu quelques mots
De fine appréciation
Et puis passé quatre heures
Face à des étrangers
Savourant leur morceau
Le temps d'une Recherche

J'ai écouté, senti
Ri, souri, soupiré
Applaudi, gratifié
Quand ils avaient fini
Tournant les yeux sans cesse
Dans l'espoir de saisir
L'ombre d'une Amazone
Apparue à l'entrée

J'ai quitté la lecture
Avant que les voix cessent
Me suis longtemps tenu
Muet parmi les livres
Conscient qu'au grand jamais
Je n'en saurais la fin
Ni ne courtiserais
La jeune femme à l'écran

Et là, sur Saint-Laurent
Evitant les flocons
J'allais, repu de mots
de sons, de souvenirs
Et le cœur presque en paix
Ni triste, ni lassé
Mais en tête une histoire
D'amour intemporel.

  1. C'est extra! Et tel que c'était.
Je suis partie dans les flocons
    Les essuie-glaces intermittents rythmaient
La sarabande étouffée de leur rires
    Ah, ces jeunes...
    La nuit, rue St-Laurent
    Merci, poëte...

What are the Chords, so that we can play it on our D45 Martin guitars ?

    1. Come on, Gerry and Dewey. I'm sure you can figure out the chords by yourselves :-)
